Cape Town (South Africa) — While the government has welcomed the news that Soccer World Cup tickets were selling well, it has expressed concern that not enough has been done to market tickets to South Africans.
Briefing the media after yesterday's cabinet meeting, chief government spokesman Themba Maseko said there was mounting concern over the fact that South Africans were not buying tickets. He said extra measures would have to be put in place with the local organising committee (LOC) to ensure that both this year's Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup finals were marketed to South Africans.
He declined to lay the blame at any particular door, saying simply that not enough had been done by the government, the LOC and the host cities and "we must now tackle these problems together".
