Kibaki lauds Malawi leader on re-election: Kenya and Malawi to worked together

Kenyan President Kibaki has congratulated President Bingu wa Mutharika on his re-election as Malawi President.

In his message, President Kibaki said by electing President wa Mutharika for another term, Malawians had demonstrated confidence in his leadership.

"The decisive victory is a clear manifestation of trust and confidence the people of Malawi have in your pragmatic and visionary leadership," said President Kibaki.

President Kibaki restated his government’s commitment to deepening relations between the two countries for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Kenya and Malawi are both members of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), which President Kibaki currently chairs.

Economic policies

The Head of State said the prudent economic and agricultural policies pursued by President Mutharika had enabled the country to register a high and steady economic growth rate.

"The food security programmes your Government put in place are admirable and have transformed Malawi into a net food exporter."

President Kibaki also saluted Malawians for the peaceful manner in which they exercised their rights while safeguarding peace and tenets of democracy.

"Following your election for a second term as President of Malawi, l salute you and convey my congratulations and best wishes from the people of Kenya. I am confident that the people of Malawi will benefit immensely from your leadership in the next five years," President Kibaki said in his message.

The President assured that Kenya and Malawi would work together with other countries in the realisation of an effective African Union that addresses the modern day challenges faced by the continent.
